On September 1st 2011, Google chairman Eric Schmidt revealed that the next overhaul to the Android 4.0 mobile operating system, the Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), a version that is supposed to work on smartphones and tablets, will be slated for sometime this fall.
Talking to Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff at the Dreamforce conference, Schmidt stated, "We have a new operating system, internally known as Ice Cream Sandwich for some reason, which is being released in October, November."
Google has remained rather tight-lipped about announcing a release date, up until now, which comes on the heels of untenable reports of Verizon unveiling the first Android 4.0 device, Droid Prime, which may perhaps be the third Google Nexus smartphone this October.
According to last week’s official stats, the Android fragmentation is still thriving, with more than half of all Android users still running on 2010’s Froyo system, better known as Android 2.2.
Some of the purported changes Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) will bring include a new app drawer UI, an updated launcher, Virtual Camera Operator head-tracking API, stackable homescreen apps, and it will also import some Honeycomb features to mobile phones. As with previous non-Honeycomb versions of Android, ICS should be completely open-sourced.
